for peace. >> it has become political. we're the mothers bearing the children that are dying in the streets. this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley. reporting tonight from the democratic national convention in philadelphia. >> pelley: and breaking news, history is just minutes away. the roll call of the states is continuing, and when it is over, hillary clinton will be the democratic candidate for president of the united states. a milestone for america, the first woman to win a major party nomination nearly a century after women first won the right to vote. nancy cordes begins our coverage. nancy? >> reporter: scott, i've spoken to a number of olden women in the arena tonight who say they never thought that they would live to see this moment. in a few minutes, we expect that senator bernie sanders will be arriving here in the vermont delegation, and he will be the one to announce that hillary

clinton has gone over the top. >> pelley: if they didn't work this out... >> 61 votes for the next president of the united states of america, hillary rodham clinton. >> reporter: the state-by-state vote is something sanders wanted to demonstrate the size of his following. >> illinois proudly casts for a true progressive and the father of the new political revolution, 74 votes for bernie sanders. >> reporter: but at the end, in a show of unity, sanders will follow clinton's lead from 2008. >> i move senator barack obama of illinois be selected by this convention, by acclimation, as the nominee of the democratic party for president of the united states. >> reporter: then, like now, some fans of the runner-up were bitterly disappointed, but there was nothing like this:

>> beat donald trump and elect hillary clinton. >> reporter: california delegates booing this morning when sanders mentioned the winner. >> it is easy to boo, but it harder to look your kids in the face who would be living under a donald trump presidency. >> reporter: nationwide a new pew poll finds 90% of sanders' supporters plan to vote for clinton. vice president joe biden. >> i bet you everything i have that hardly anyone's going to pull the lever for trump. come on, man. are you kidding me? >> reporter: but the sanders' delegates here are his most arden followers. melissa arab is paralegal from michigan. do you prefer donald trump to hillary clinton? >> i prefer bernie sanders. i'm pledged to bernie sanders and i'm voting for bernie sanders. >> reporter: the hard line has led to some exasperation. >> 90% of what bernie wanted he got in the platform. >> even among some sanders'

backers like sarah silverman. >> to the bernie or bust people, you're being ridiculous. >> reporter: if most unifying figure so far may have been the first lady. >> because of hillary clinton, my daughters and all of sons and daughters now take for granted that a woman can be president of the united states. >> reporter: with his speech last night and the role he's about to play, bernie sanders is providing democrats with something that republican ted cruz was reluctant to give his party last week, confirmation that former rivals are now enthusiastically working together to defeat a common opponent, scott. >> pelley: nancy cordes, thank you. there's been a lot of high spirit around the roll call vote, and the state of rhode island is pledging its delegates now. it will not be long before hillary clinton goes over the top. in the meantime, donald trump took his battle to a meeting of

the veterans of foreign wars in charlotte, north carolina. and major garrett is there. >> reporter: the g.o.p. ticket arrived to enthusiastic v.f.w. applause and used that convention to challenge the democratic strategy for a modern-day enemy. >> we need to change our foreign policy to focus on defeating and destroying isis, a word you didn't hear last night at the democratic convention. you didn't hear it. >> reporter: trump then implied democrats are to blame for the rise of the terror group. >> they really established isis because of weakness. >> reporter: trump rarely details what strengths he'd use to defeat isis. he's advocated more bombing missions and vague plans to seize oil revenues but trump routinely dances around whether he would order more u.s. troops into combat. trump also stoked anti-clinton sentiment one day after she addressed the same group. >> crooked hillary clinton.

and to think she was here yesterday. i guess she didn't do very well. >> reporter: trump promised to whip the veterans' administration into shape and joked about the workload he fears from a 24-hour white house hot line he would set up to take complaints about delayed hillarh care. >> this could keep me very busy at night, folks. this will take the place of twitter. >> reporter: speaking of twitter, trump went online and went off on last night's convention speakers. about new jersey senator cory booker, "if he is the future of the democratic party, they have no future." >> hillary clinton will make an outstanding president. >> reporter: trump said bernie sanders sold out to clinton. as for massachusetts senator elizabeth warren... >> what kind of a man acts like this? >> reporter: trump said her speech bombed and that she's always hated clinton. the clinton campaign readily admits isis was not mentioned on

an opening night devoted to women and children but promises those mentions are coming. scott, as for trump and isis, jake sullivan, a senior clinton adviser tells us he believes trump's plan to defeat the terror group is so secret no one knows what it is. >> pelley: major garrett, thank you very much. as the roll call continues, we're going to now go to the investigation of the leak of democratic party e-mails that threw this convention into turmoil yesterday and forced the party chair to resign. julianna goldman has the latest. >> reporter: intelligence and administration officials tell cbs news they're confident the russian government is behind the dnc's e-mail attack and says it has all the hallmarks of other cyber attacks launched by the kremlin's intelligence service. russian officials are calling americans paranoid. foreign minister sergey lavrov dismissed the allegations when asked about them today. while they can't ascribe a

motive for the i'm dump on the eve of the democratic convention, u.s. officials have long suspected ties between the kremlin and wikileaks, the group that posted the dnc e-mails. they say this episode strengthens those suspicions and the clinton's accusation that russia is trying to help donald trump has capped a cloud of cold war era intrigue over philadelphia. >> russia stole it for my benefit, russia. >> reporter: in north carolina last night, trump says he's never even met russian president vladimir putin. >> wouldn't it be nice if we actually did get along with russia? >> reporter: but he has long pain and thed he wants to build a relationship with him and has promoted policies like reducing the role of nato that would empower putin. whether or not moscow is trying the sway the u.s. election, the officials say the leak fits into a pattern of russia using cyber warfare to stir up trouble for its adversaries and takes it to a new level. eugene rumer is a former officer at the national intelligence council. >> any time washington appears

weakened, discredited and disoriented serves the interests of russia. report we may get a better indication if russia is really trying to meddle in the election if these leaks become a pattern. scott, one official tells us it will be fairly obvious if they release more e-mails at other inopportune times for the democratic nominee. >> pelley: julianna goldman, thanks. it is done. the state of south dakota has just put hillary clinton over the top with the number of delegates that she needs to become the first woman of either party to be nominated for president of the united states. it has been nearly 100 years since women first had the right to vote. the celebration of this achievement is going to be delayed. the democratic party has decided to tally all the votes from all of the states and territories and have the celebration at the end, but our cbs news count

indicates that hillary clinton is now the nominee, the first woman to have that title. now, among the demonstrators outside the convention today were members of the black lives matter movement protesting the deaths of black men killed by police. >> stop killing our people. stop killing our people. >> pelley: mothers who lost children to violence will address this convention tonight. they talked today to our demarco morgan, and we'll have that a little bit later in the broadcast. prime time convention coverage begins at 10:00, 9:00 central, and we'll be joined by norah o'donnell, charlie rose, gayle king and john dickerson. the featured speaker tonight, former president bill clinton. today isis claimed a gruesome attack at a catholic church in northern france. two men murdered an elderly priest. one of the men was under house

arrest. charlie d'agata is following this. >> reporter: they killed father jacques hamel just as he finished morning mass, forcing the 86-year-old priest to kneel. then they slit his throat. the attackers took three nuns and two worshipers hostage. sister danielle managed to escape and told a local radio station that hamel had tried to fight back, but he had been overpowered. she said the attackers recorded it on their cell phones, and that's when she ran out. police shot the two men dead when they tried to leave the church, freeing the hostages. within hours isis claimed responsibility, calling them "soldiers." french prosecutors said one of the suspects was a french citizen known to police and had been arrested twice on his way to syria. he was wearing an electronic monitor at the time of the attack as well as a fake

explosive vest. today's murder appears to be the fourth isis-inspired attack in western europe in less than two weeks, leaving many anxious and fearful. france had just buried 84 victims in nice after a driver drove a truck through a holiday crowd. when a teenage afghan refugee in germany attacked train passengers with an ax. and a syrian suicide bomber blew himself up outside a german music concert. french president francois hollande already extended france's state of emergency for another six months after the attacks in nice, scott. today he said the threat of islamic extremism to france and europe has never been so severe. >> pelley: charlie d'agata, thanks. well, since friday four children in this country have died in overheated cars, but there is new technology that could save lives. here's our transportation

correspondent kris van cleave. >> reporter: with the temperature hovering around 100 degrees, a family's trip to church sunday turned deadly in dallas. a three-year-old was apparently forgotten, left inside the family's vehicle in the parking lot. he died. so far this year at least 23 children in 14 states have died after being left in hot cars. that's more than double this time last year. >> if you don't think something like this can happen to you, you're wrong. >> reporter: reggie mckinnon's 17-month-old daughter peyton died after he forgot she was in the back seat. he had taken her from a doctor's appointment and driven back to work. his office was just a block from her day care. >> when i opened the back door to the vehicle, you know, that's the moment that my life and my family's life changed forever. i found peyton still in her car seat. >> reporter: the interior of a car can heat up fast, adding two degrees a minute. in just half hour today, this

car reached nearly 125 degrees. child heat stroke in cars can happen when the outdoor temperature is as low as 57. deborah hersman from the national safety council. >> when people get out of their normal routine. when they get occupied by something going on in their life, they may just have a different day than normal. they may forget that that child is in the back seat. [dinging] >> reporter: that warning is a first-of-its-kind system general motors is rolling out in the 2017gmc acadea. it alerts the driver at the end of any trip if the previous door was previously opened, a remind they're could save a life. we left this s.u.v. out in the sun for the last several hours. it's about 130 degrees inside, and that can be particularly dangerous to a small child, scott, because their body temperatures rise at about four times the rate of an adult. that body temperature hits 107, it can be fatal. >> pelley: kris van cleave,

>> pelley: firefighters are making progress against a huge wildfire in the mountains north of los angeles. some folks have been allowed to go back home, but others don't have a home to go home to. mireya villarrreal is there. >> reporter: this is where the sand fire did its worst, consuming 18 homes. the one behind me included in that number. three to four days after this home burned, firefighters are still on scene. they're concerned that the entire structure might come down, which is why they're on scene putting out hot spots. in nearly five days that sand fire has eaten up about 37,000 acres of land. it is at 25% containment, but it is still threatening homes north of here, which is why some evacuation orders are still in place. at its height, 10,000 homes were

senator of vermont who won 22 states and 18 million votes in the primaries and caucuses, has just asked that all the votes be recorded, including his own, to make a record of the remarkable insurgency that he has led, but now he has said that hillary clinton should be elected. nancy cordes is down there near the vermont delegation. nancy? >> reporter: scott, i was here just a few feet away from the microphone, and just to inject a little bit of extra drama into this moment, the sanders campaign and clinton campaign would not confirm until the last month that he was going to actually come here, join the vermont delegation, and perform this symbolic role. the state of vermont passed on its turn in the chain of events here so they could go last so they could have this big moment, and i will tell you, scott, there's been some division here on the floor the past couple

days, but not tonight. i was talking to a man in the ohio delegation a couple of minutes ago, and he's a bernie sanders supporter. he pointed to the woman next to him and said, she's been active in the women's movement since the 1970s. she's been looking forward to this moment for decades. and both of them instantly teared up. so bernie sanders recognized the historic nature of this moment and came here to play his part. >> pelley: nancy, thank you very much. the motion has just passed by acclimation. all those in favor say aye. the room erupted and hillary clinton is now officially the democratic nominee. let's listen for just a moment. ♪ i'm happy

john dickerson is down by the podium for us. john? >> reporter: scott, whatever low-grade fever there may have been in terms of upset in the party, that fever has broken. the roar here was deafening as everybody celebrated hillary clinton being named as the first woman to be the nominee of a major party. this is an extraordinary political march for hillary clinton. nine years, six months and five days ago she first declared for president. she has now been a part of four presidential campaigns. three of them have gotten the nominee, two for husband and now one for herself, and the history just marches on. later tonight bill clinton will become the first former president and spouse of a party nominee to get up and vouch for his wife. >> pelley: john dickerson, thanks. the crowd still celebrating here in philadelphia the nomination of the first woman candidate.
